Movie buffs woke up to the sad news that Nana Patekar is no more. The 75-year-old actor passed away due to a heart attack in Goa on the morning of October 8. In an interview 11 years ago, Nana had revealed how he got his first film, his association with Ajay Devgn and why he would sometimes walk away from the set.
As part of the promotion of Welcome Back in August 2015, Nana Patekar told Bombay Times, “I came into films because of Smita Patil, who was already doing films and knew me from Pune. I had been reluctant, but she insisted. She took me to Ravi Chopra for a role in Aaj Ki Awaz (1984) and initially, I was offered a lousy role of one of the rapists. I said no and told them what kind of actor I was. I was annoyed and was leaving just when Smita came. She asked me, 'Why are you going?' I abused the person who had offered me that role. And then I got a better role, which also was not great, but I got recognized for that film.”
In 2018, he worked in a Marathi film, Aapla Manus, which was produced by Ajay Devgn. Just a few months before, he was seen in a hilarious special appearance in Golmaal Again (2017). In an interview with Mumbai Mirror in February 2018, Nana Patekar spoke about his bond with Ajay. He said, “I did it (cameo in Golmaal Again) only for Ajay. He’s a dear friend and a really nice guy. Humari dosti marte dum tak rahegi.”
In an interview to Mid-Day in the same month, he was asked about getting angry and at times, even walking away from the set. He reasoned, “I may sound arrogant, but it’s true that I interfere a lot on the sets. There have been times when I have even walked out. But these things happen when the scriptwriter has not written the script, and then he makes it up at the last minute. I am not a machine. I can’t learn the lines in half an hour.”
