Filmmaker Suresh Triveni, known for his nuanced and character-driven storytelling in films like Tumhari Sulu and Jalsa, recently opened up about the emotional journey behind his latest project Subedaar. The director shared that the film holds deep personal significance for him, as it serves as a tribute to the star who shaped his cinematic sensibilities, the film’s lead, Anil Kapoor.
Speaking about his admiration for the actor, Triveni recalled how Kapoor’s iconic performances influenced him growing up. The filmmaker described the experience of directing his childhood idol as surreal.
Sharing a personal anecdote, Suresh Triveni says, “I’m a boy from Ranchi, and there was a whole Munna phase after Tezaab released. I clearly remember I used to flaunt the laadla orange shirt as a kid . For a small town kid to Imagine he will direct his matinee idol is nothing short of a miracle.”
The director explained that Subedaar became a deeply personal project over time. What began as a spontaneous idea gradually transformed into a film driven by conviction, emotion, and dedication to the story he wanted to tell.
Reflecting on the journey of bringing the film to life, Triveni said the support he received played a key role in shaping the project.
“Subedaar is personal. Looking back, Suresh Triveni admits the journey that followed is one he wouldn’t trade for anything on earth. What started as a spontaneous idea evolved into a deeply personal commitment, a film driven by emotion, conviction, and what he calls his own ‘stubbornness.’ This medium is about conviction and once I shared this idea with Vikram, he backed it instantly and picked up the call on Anil Kapoor. And what further amazed me was the trust Anil Kapoor showed on me without flinching for a moment.”
The film, which stars Anil Kapoor in the lead role, was released to much fanfare on March 5 on Amazon Prime Video.
Apart from Subedaar, Suresh Triveni is also working on another exciting project titled Maa Behen, which is part of an upcoming slate for Netflix. The project will feature Madhuri Dixit and Triptii Dimri, further showcasing the director’s evolving storytelling journey.
