Suresh Triveni on why the Anil Kapoor starrer Subedaar channels the spirit of 80s revenge films

Subedaar harks back to the revenge dramas of the 1980s, yet it feels fresh. How did you achieve that balance?
I grew up on a heavy dosage of Hindi films while living in Ranchi. The sound and rhythm of Hindi cinema have their own language. As a filmmaker, I always dreamed of bringing that flavour back. At the same time, I have always liked mainstream cinema that is also cinematically rich. Subedaar is an attempt to combine those elements. Today we have the technical prowess to make something contemporary while still staying rooted in the storytelling traditions we grew up with.

How was Subedaar born?
Subedaar was born out of an urge to reconnect with the child in me who was fascinated by the sights and sounds of popular Hindi cinema. No matter how much pressure there is to be known as a “serious” filmmaker, you can’t silence the kid inside you the one who made you fall in love with movies in the first place. For me, Subedaar is also a fanboy tribute to Anil Kapoor, whose career has always fascinated me. He’s an ever-evolving actor, and I felt it was time to remind audiences of the star power he still commands. That’s really the genesis of Subedaar.

There is often an undercurrent of violence in your films, but Subedaar seems to explode with externalised aggression. Why the shift?
I’m fascinated by almost every genre. I was beginning to get comfortable in a space that dealt largely with internal conflicts. I’ve always tried to walk the middle path, and Subedaar is another attempt in that direction. This has been the most challenging film I’ve made so far. Balancing mainstream appeal with cinematic sensibility is never easy. As I mentioned earlier, I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and push myself into territory I hadn’t explored before hence the action. But the idea has always been to balance the aggression with emotion.

Violence, I suppose, exists within all of us. We simply choose different ways to channel it. It’s perhaps the most primal human emotion, and unfortunately, many civilisations have emerged through violence. That might explain the fascination with it. Of course, the responsible depiction of violence in cinema has always been debated, and with Subedaar I wanted to enter that conversation in my own way.

What’s next for you?
Right now, I’m busy finishing the post-production of my upcoming Netflix film Maa Behen. It stars the incredible Madhuri Dixit, Triptii Dimri, Dharnaa Durga, Gitanjali Kulkarni and Ravi Kishan. I would describe it as a domestic noir comedy. After that, I’m keen to do something theatrical again. I’m exploring a film in the horror genre, and I would also love to make a film for children. It’s high time we created more cinema that families can enjoy together.
