Actor Sanjay Mishra has spoken about a difficult phase in his life following the death of his father, when he stepped away from the film industry and briefly worked at a roadside dhaba in Rishikesh. The actor reflected on this period during a recent conversation with Prakhar Gupta, where he discussed grief, guilt, and his decision to leave Mumbai.
Sanjay shared that the loss of his father had a deep emotional impact on him, compounded by health issues he was facing at the time. He recalled undergoing surgery during the shooting of All The Best and said that soon after, he left for Rishikesh. “I went through an operation during shooting of All The Best. And I ran to Rishikesh after that,” he said.
Speaking about his state of mind during that period, Sanjay explained that he was not in a condition to continue working. “There was an old man who used to make tea and Maggi at a Dhaba and I was free at that time, my mind was not working because my health was not good, and also my father had just died,” he said.
During the interaction, Sanjay also spoke about the emotional burden he carried during his father’s final days. He revealed that he felt his father believed he had been humiliated by his son, a sentiment Sanjay later found reflected in his father’s diary. The actor admitted that this realization affected him deeply and contributed to his decision to distance himself from acting for a while.
Sanjay described this phase as one where he felt directionless and disconnected from his earlier life in films. He has previously spoken about how working at the dhaba was not a planned decision but a result of wanting to escape, reflect, and live anonymously for a period. He added that he believed he was not meant to survive that phase of his life, saying, “I was supposed to die.”
Over time, Sanjay gradually returned to Mumbai and resumed acting. His comeback was marked by supporting roles that gained recognition for their realism and restraint rather than scale. He later became known for performances in films such as Ankhon Dekhi, Kaamyaab, and Masaan, among others.
The actor has often stated that the period away from the industry changed his outlook on life and work. He has credited personal loss and hardship for reshaping his understanding of success and failure, and for grounding him both personally and professionally.
