Subhash K Jha speaks about Kuch Kuch Locha Hai

The minute I saw Ram Kapoor staring at Ms. Leone’s breasts, I knew this film was doomed to shag….I mean, sag.

Who wants to watch the very well-fed Ram Kapoor (he, of the Mere Dad Ki Maruti frame…errr, fame) ogling at the bountifully endowed Ms. Leone? It’s like watching porn without the zing.

Kuch Kuch Locha Hai (KKLH) is a sad travesty of a comedy, clumsy and contrived, edited with a butcher’s knife and as satisfying as seducing a neighbour’s over-sex wife. More remarkable for its attempts to generate laughter from the cleavage-space rather than an attempt to explore the age-old relationship between the unattainable sexy star and her adoring fan.

We saw this relationship in all its glory in Ram Gopal Varma’s Mast and more admirably in the Julia Roberts-Hugh Grant rom-comedy whose name I won’t mention here.

You don’t talk of the sacred in a brothel.

And director Deven Dholakia’s film is a brothel broth, a perverted burlesque based on the fantasy-fulfillment theory of the jovial jerk and his voluptuous jerk-off.

The Gujarati milieu is utterly caricatural (and considering the Mody mood of the nation, highly dangerous too). Director Deven Dholakia would have us believe women in Gujarati homes do puja 24/7, dandiya all over the house and the family eats dhoklas for dinner lunch and breakfast…with room left over for some serious porn-and-supari.

Burp re burp.

The humour-if one may call the tacky sitcom-styled guffaws that-hinges on the Gujju businessman bringing the sexy star to his traditional dhokla-dandiya home and introducing his son and his girlfriend as his parents.

Ha ha ho ho to that.

Ram Kapoor, known to give measured performances on television, here hams it up as if sausages and bananas were going out of the market .Sunny Leone is required to be pretty provocative and orgasmic. She scores good marks on all three counts. The actors who plays Ram’s son Navdeep Chabra and the son’s girlfriend Evelyn Sharma seem to be auditioning for a condom ad without knowing how the damned thing is used.

Perhaps there would have been some humour in the situations if the script didn’t seem to be written in the loo on reams of toilet paper. Funny, that this week’s other release Piku has all the toilet humour. But it’s KKLH which creates an unpleasant stink.
