Whistling Woods International, the Mumbai-based film institute founded by filmmaker Subhash Ghai, has begun a five-day screenwriting workshop in collaboration with the Screenwriters Association (SWA). The programme, running from March 11 to March 15, is designed to bring filmmakers, writers and studio executives together with aspiring screenwriters for a series of sessions on storytelling and the changing content landscape.

The workshop is being led by screenwriter Anjum Rajabali, who heads the screenwriting department at the institute and is known for films such as The Legend of Bhagat Singh and Raajneeti. According to details released by the institute, the sessions include discussions on topics such as character psychology, narrative structure, pitching scripts and the current opportunities for writers across film, television and streaming platforms.

Several filmmakers and industry professionals are scheduled to participate in guest sessions during the programme. These include directors Sriram Raghavan, Mohit Suri and Zoya Akhtar, as well as executives such as Aparna Purohit of Aamir Khan Productions and Aashish Singh of Red Chillies Entertainment. Writers and creators including Smita Singh and Divyanidhi Sharma are also part of the speaker lineup.  Many of the participating speakers have worked on well-known projects across film and streaming platforms. For instance, Raghavan directed the critically acclaimed thriller Andhadhun, while Akhtar is known for films such as Gully Boy and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Meanwhile, Smita Singh has written for projects including the Netflix film Raat Akeli Hai and the streaming series Mirzapur.

Speaking about the initiative, Subhash Ghai said the focus of the programme is to strengthen writing in the industry. “Screenwriting has evolved tremendously over the years,” he said, adding that strong writing and character depth have become central to both films and streaming content. The workshop is open to both SWA members and non-members, with participants able to attend sessions at the institute’s Mumbai campus or join them online.
