Anurag Kashyap had a fascinating conversation with Mayank Shekhar of Mid-Day about his journey, Kennedy, setbacks etc. Anurag’s Kennedy released last month on Zee5 and the reputed filmmaker opened up about its beginning.

Anurag Kashyap explained why Sudhir Mishra is thanked in the opening credits of Kennedy, “The idea of the character came from him. Back in 2003, he was making a film with Tejaswini Kolhapure and Sanjay Dutt. It was called Ek Raat Achanak or something. It was based on the character of Uday Shetty, which I did not know about and Sudhir Mishra told me about him. So, the film was based on a real person. He used to be a cop and lived with his ghosts. He was very ruthless. The dialogue ‘Aayega toh jaayega’ was his dialogue. He used to roam around Bandra. The couples didn’t have space and they would hang out near Sea Rock Hotel. He would go, put a gun to their heads and tell them, ‘Aayega toh jaayega’. So, those things are not fictional. Its real. That man existed in the late 80s. He used to do the dirty job for the cops. That became the basis for the film that I was writing for Sudhir.”
He continued, “It was shot for 2 or 2 ½ days and was produced by Tutu Sharma and Boney Kapoor. Then, I don’t know what happened and it stalled. It never took off again. That was right after Paanch.”
Anurag added, “That character stayed with me. I tried to write a Malayalam film based on it for Rajeev Ravi. I narrated that character for Rajeev Ravi to Mohanlal. There was no script; it was only the character.”
Kennedy starred Rahul Bhat, Sunny Leone and others. Set during the Covid lockdown, it was also inspired by the recent true incidents of Mumbai.
