Hairstylist Sanky Evrus, who successfully established his name in the Bollywood industry by curating some exclusive and quirky looks, has been working with actors including Kriti Kharbanda, Malavika Mohanan, Bhumi Pednekar and among others. He is currently working with Bollywood star Sara Ali Khan as they worked together in Coolie No.1 and upcoming film Atrangi Re.
Whenever we see actors look their best on screen, what we don’t know is that it takes a village to make celebrities look presentable. From simple looks to some playful ones, from fashion to beauty, it takes a lot of efforts to curate the best looks.
Bollywood Hungama spoke to the celebrity hairstylist Sanky Evrus on his upcoming projects, curating looks and the work life during pandemic and many more.
How are you doing in this pandemic situation since all shoots have come to a halt again?
I do miss the work but I am utilising this time at home working on myself. [I’m] trying to develop a healthy eating habit and lifestyle. I am also watching a lot of series on OTT which I didn’t have time for earlier.
You’ve worked with actress Malavika Mohanan. What goes into designing a hairdo? Do you discuss it with her before hand? Tell us something about this.
There is always a mood board and a discussion. But sometimes we just go with the flow to curate something out of the box. I really enjoyed recreating the iconic look of Rekha from Silsila on Malavika. It’s not something I usually get to do on movie sets

You work with Sara Ali Khan a lot. In Coolie No. 1, there was a lot of experiment done to change her look and you even played with a lot of hairstyles in songs. Can you elaborate on that?
We tried to keep it fun and massy considering the film in mind. Coolie No. 1 is a mass entertainer and the whole idea behind creating looks was to inspire the audience. A film like that and also Sara has a lot of young fans. So, keeping it young and fun was the only way to go.
Recently, you also worked with her in the upcoming movie Atrangi Re, what kind of looks can we expect? Is she getting a sort of a makeover?
Atrangi Re is something very different and special to me. Sara will be seen in a look like never before. It was an honour to collaborate with fine director like Aanand. L. Rai and a terrific DOP like Pankaj. It was very different from what I had done on her ever. As a hairstylist, we mostly get to do fancy styles on contrary to her looks in Atrangi Re which required certain details which seem very easy but it takes a lot of effort to achieve the right look.
What is Sara Ali Khan's go to hair style? Is she experimental?
Sara Ali Khan’s go to hairstyle in my opinion is a basic ponytail. She believes in comfort over style. She is a simpleton at heart. Her style is more classic and timeless.

What are your upcoming projects? Apart from Atrangi Re, what is your next venture you’re working on and with whom?
Currently, I am working with Bhumi Pednekar on Mr. Lele. Then, Yudhra with Malavika Mohanan and another film with Bhumi post that.
Whenever you have to come up with a new look, how you deal with the pressure as you know that people leave no chance to troll if it’s not up to their expectations?
Whenever I go on set, I am mostly trying to fulfil my actor’s expectations. I am not bothered about trolling at all. As a hair artist, what matters to me is that everyone is on the same page and we go back home happy. It’s all a team effort – right from the makeup artist to the manager to the stylist to the assistants.
How exactly is the work situation like on the sets now in the new normal? And now that second wave has hit us so bad?
Proper precautions are taken on sets. We do our COVID-19 test every week. Wear masks and gloves. Work on a minimum crew. And now as second wave has hit, there is no clarity when the work will resume. But more than anything right now we need to stay safe and be there for each other. It’s a time of unimaginable crisis and we need to fight it together.
