Trolling of celebrities or public figures have become huge on social media. Anyone with a social media page can easily troll a person for having an opinion on a certain issue or a political issue. In this country, many times celebrities and public figures refrain themselves from speaking on controversial issues as they either get massively trolled or receive backlash for having an opinion on certain issue. Recently, Stree stars Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor opened up about these topics and why Bollywood celebrities avoid talking about political controversies in an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama.
When asked about why some celebrities speak up on issues while others refrain, Rajkummar Rao said, “You are a public figure and you are in the public eye. It’s easy for anyone to say anything if they don’t agree with your statement or your point of view. We have seen in the recent past that somebody has said something and people did not take it in the right way. They have trolled them and there are so many consequences those actors had to face. I think we are being more careful now about what to speak. Of course, you still have to put your point of view across but I think you can be a little bit careful with the words now.”
Shraddha Kapoor, who is also starring in another film Batti Gul Meter Chalu which has social issue as its plot, talked about how sometimes when celebrities do speak on certain topics, they get misquoted. “I definitely feel that is the issue which is quite prevalent where a celebrity or a public person says something and the words are completely twisted around. I think that is also the reason why people don’t say much because they are like ‘Kya fayda mera milne ka because if I say something as it my words will be misquoted or twisted around.’ But, the way I see it, I actually use my social media as much as I can to support causes or beliefs that I would really like to share with the world. And it doesn’t necessarily have to be controversial or sensational. I am a big advocate of preserving nature, and wildlife and all about animal welfare. I think those that very important issues as well. You know, it doesn’t always have to be controversial or sensational. You have to be true to who you are, understand that you have the responsibility because you are in the limelight. And you must weigh your words accordingly,” she said.
