The Nun II, which was released two months ago, recently completed 50 days and is all set to end its lifetime run with collections around Rs. 44 crores in India. The film faced a giant obstacle in the form of Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Jawan. Both movies released together, on September 7. As expected, Jawan emerged as an all-time blockbuster. But The Nun II also put up impressive numbers, considering the competition. This was possible not just due to its content but also because it belongs to The Conjuring-The Nun-Annabelle Universe, which has a huge following of its own. 8 films of this series have been released till now and their total collections amount to a huge Rs. 270.23 crores.
Special Box-office Report: The Conjuring-The Nun-Annabelle Universe films collect Rs. 265 crores in India; is the BIGGEST horror franchise in India by miles
The series began with The Conjuring (2013). It got noticed due to very positive word and hence, it ended its run with collections amounting to around Rs. 17 crores. Annabelle (2014) came in cinemas the next year. It opened well due to the connection with The Conjuring. But due to mixed reports, its collections totalled Rs. 13 crores.
The Conjuring 2 (2016) was one of the biggest surprises of that year. No one imagined in their wildest dreams that it would end up collecting Rs. 61.80 crores despite negligible promotion and an adults-only certificate. To put things into perspective, it collected more than some of the bigger Hindi films which released that year like Befikre and Ki & Ka.
As expected, Annabelle: Creation (2017) took advantage of the super-hit success of the predecessor, as it collected Rs. 48.45 crores. The Nun (2018) a year later did a healthy number of Rs. 47.65 crores. Annabelle Comes Home (2019), too, did fine as it earned Rs. 26 crores despite not-so-good word of mouth.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021) performed poorly as it had a delayed release in India due to the pandemic. By then, many had seen it on pirated prints. The word of mouth also wasn’t favourable and moreover, the crucial state of Maharashtra was shut. As a result, it earned just Rs. 7.45 crores from 786 screens.
But the success of The Nun II proves that the franchise is alive and kicking. The total collections of all these 8 films amount to a huge Rs. 270.23 crores. This proves that it is the biggest horror franchise in India by miles. It also indicates that the next film in the series, The Conjuring: Last Rites, will also benefit.
The lifetime collections of the films of The Conjuring-The Nun-Annabelle Universe (Nett Figures)
The Conjuring – Rs. 17 Crores
Annabelle – Rs. 13 Crores
The Conjuring 2 – Rs. 61.80 crores
Annabelle: Creation – Rs. 48.45 crores
The Nun – Rs. 47.65 crores
Annabelle Comes Home – Rs. 26 crores
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It – Rs. 7.45 crores
The Nun II – Rs. 44 crores
TOTAL: 265.35 crores
These numbers also show that Warner Bros films dominate the list of top 10 Hollywood horror films in India. 7 out of 10 films belong to this studio. 6 of them belong to The Conjuring universe while the other one is Evil Dead Rise (2023). It was released in April this year and collected Rs. 36.50 crores though it clashed with Salman Khan’s Eid release, Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan. The other films on the list are It (2017), Insidious: The Red Door (2023) and It Chapter Two (2019). Interestingly, both films of It were released by Warner Bros and in that regard, Warner Bros takes the cake with 9 out of 10 films in this coveted list.
