PVR INOX, Versova Homage Screening and Radio Nasha organized the screening of Satya (1998) on January 15, two days before its re-release in cinemas across the country. The event was memorable as it was graced by the film’s team – director Ram Gopal Varma, presenters Bharat Shah and Vinay Chowksey, music director Vishal Bhardwaj, writer Anurag Kashyap and actors Urmila Matondkar, Manoj Bajpayee, Chakravarthy, Aditya Srivastava and Makrand Deshpande. The team of the film went down memory lane like never before, especially Manoj Bajpayee.

Manoj earlier revealed that he was cast in the role after Ram Gopal Varma was impressed with him in Bandit Queen (1994). He then said, “Ramu told me that he needed writers. This is when I met this gentleman (points at Anurag Kashyap) outside Sriram Raghavan’s office. Anurag told me that he had seen my plays and also listed the books he had read. I realized that he was 21-22 years old, itna sincere hai, itna kuch karta hai. Isko le chalte hai.”

He then raised laughs as he said, “The second night, I feared that the film will get shelved! We were partying and drinking. Anurag Kashyap ko daaru chadh gayi! And he started criticizing Ramu’s films! The more he criticized his films, the more I slipped under my chair. I feared that jo career ban raha tha, woh khatam ho gaya (laughs).”

However, nothing of that sort happened. Manoj Bajapayee continued, “On the contrary, Ramu started liking it (the criticism of his films) and both became inseparable. They used to crack jokes all day. Me, Makarand Deshpande; we all felt like outsiders. Only two people who used to talk like girlfriend and boyfriend were Ram Gopal Varma and Anurag Kashyap!”

Manoj further added to the fun as he stated, “I was very insecure and jealous of Chakravarthy as he was doing the title role. I knew that issi ka photo jaayega poster pe! I was more concerned about the poster than the film (laughs).”

Anurag Kashyap took over and said, “I used to deal with it every morning. Before going on the set, I used to get a call from Manoj asking ‘Yeh mera aaj ka scene final cut mein rahega ya nahin?’! I had to first assure him and then we used to come on the set.”
