Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the acclaimed director known for his intense and gritty films, is gearing up for the release of his upcoming action thriller, Animal. Starring Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role, the film marks Vanga's second directorial venture in Hindi cinema.Sandeep Reddy Vanga draws inspiration for Ranbir Kapoor’s character in Animal from real-life experiences: “The longing I saw…”
In a recent conversation with The Hindu, Vanga opened up about the inspiration behind Ranbir Kapoor's character in Animal. When asked if the character drew parallels from real life, similar to his previous protagonist, Arjun Reddy, Vanga revealed that he drew inspiration from his own childhood experiences.
"I studied in a school run by Aga Khan Education Service in Warangal, Telangana," Vanga explained. "I had a few friends whose parents were working in Oman and Dubai. These boys would be dying to meet their respective fathers once a year. The longing I saw in them stayed with me subconsciously and I used it to shape Ranbir's character."
Vanga added that the darker aspects of the character are purely fictional, but the emotional core stems from his personal observations. "The dark zone, of course, is fiction," he clarified.
Addressing the fine line between portraying troubled characters and glorifying them, Vanga asserted that the perception of toxicity varies depending on individual perspectives. "The definition of toxicity will be different for you and me," he stated. "It depends on how you look at a story and its characters."
Vanga also addressed the criticism he faced for his previous films, Arjun Reddy and Kabir Singh. While he didn't name names, he hinted at instances where certain individuals used the controversy surrounding his films to gain publicity for their own projects.
"I did not face much criticism for Arjun Reddy, but it was different for Kabir Singh," Vanga recalled. "I don't want to name anyone, but I saw a few people debating about Kabir Singh to get publicity before the release of their own films. A leading producer-director said he was scared to admit liking Kabir Singh. People acted as though I had made a film on the lines of the French film Irreversible. That film left me disturbed for days, though I could also see the artistic side of it."
Regarding Animal, Vanga expressed his satisfaction with the film's A certificate, reiterating that it is not suitable for audiences under the age of 18. "As far as Animal is concerned, I'd like to say that I am glad it got an A certificate. It is not for anyone under the age of 18," he stated firmly.
Vanga further clarified that he would not take his own son or his extended family's children to watch Animal in theatres. "I will not be taking my son Arjun, my brother's kids, or any of my cousin's children to watch this film in the theatres," he declared. "Maybe I will have another child-friendly cut of the film for them."
Speaking of the film, it is slated to release on December 1. Besides Kapoor, the film stars Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor and Bobby Deol in the lead. It is going to clash with Vicky Kaushal’s Sam Bahadur.
