Some filmmakers become great as time passes and some filmmakers are destined to create history from their first film. Aditya Dhar comes in the latter category. His debut film, Uri: The Surgical Strike (2019), was a sleeper blockbuster, collecting Rs. 245.36 crores. His next, Dhurandhar (2025), is now the all-time record grosser, as it earned Rs. 895.42 crores. The total collection of both films comes to Rs. 1,140.78 crores.
Bollywood Hungama went through box office data and realized that Aditya Dhar, at present, is the fourth biggest director of Bollywood, in terms of the cumulative lifetime number of his films. The first position is taken by Rohit Shetty. He has directed 16 films to date that have collected Rs. 1,924.21 crores. Then comes Siddharth Anand, whose eight films have earned Rs. 1,388.77 crores. Rajkumar Hirani, whose six films have cumulatively collected Rs. 1,196.71 crores, takes the third position.
In short, Dhurandhar The Revenge needs to collect just Rs. 55.93 crores for Aditya Dhar to go past Rajkumar Hirani’s record. If the sequel earns Rs. 247.99 crores, Aditya will beat Siddharth Anand’s record. And once Dhurandhar The Revenge collects Rs. 783.43 crores, Aditya Dhar will defeat Rohit Shetty and emerge as the number one director of Bollywood. He’ll also be the first Bollywood director to inaugurate the Rs. 2000 crore club. However, that would happen if the sequel earns around Rs. 860 crores. Considering the first part earned Rs. 895 crores, it is given that the second installment would do more business.
Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “It’s a mammoth achievement for Aditya Dhar. Imagine his track record. His first film, Uri, was a blockbuster. His second film, Dhurandhar, did historic business and now Dhurandhar The Revenge will follow suit.”
He added, “Kudos also to Jyoti Deshpande as well as Lokesh Dhar for backing such a project. They are the off-screen Dhurandhars!”
Vishek Chauhan, owner of Roopbani Cinema in Purnia, Bihar, stated, “He did what the whole of Bollywood couldn’t do – he made a solid action film like never before. Mumbai filmmakers were unable to execute a well-made action film. Aditya reinstated the belief system of Bollywood. He has inspired so many people in the film industry. To make a film of this kind, that too, after Uri, speaks volumes. He is the ultimate legend.”
Suniel Wadhwa, co-founder and director at film production and distribution firm Karmic Films, commented, “He’s in the league of Steven Spielberg. He’s a brilliant director who knows his craft. He’s sure to flourish with every movie. Even Uri and films made under his production were deftly made.”
Shariq Patel, former CEO of Zee Studios, opined, “He has proven himself. He delivered huge numbers with Uri and with Dhurandhar, he solidifies the fact that he’s a top-notch maker. We need more such filmmakers who can mount films on a grand vision and blow our minds. Ultimately, we go to the cinemas to have a supreme cinematic experience and Aditya is able to deliver that.”
Trade analyst Atul Mohan exulted, “He’s a director to watch out for. Dhurandhar was a different kind of cinema altogether. We were used to watching spy films. But he went against the tide and showed us how a film can be raw yet engaging and entertaining. He also knows how to generate craze. With Uri, he introduced ‘How’s the josh’, which became quite popular. Even with Dhurandhar, he has delivered what the audience wants. He’s a very smart filmmaker.”
He added, “It now remains to be seen where he goes from here. Even he must have never imagined that Dhurandhar would do such historic business. He’ll face the real pressure now on what to make next. That would be his real litmus test.”
