3 years ago, there was a time when the Bollywood film industry was unfairly and continuously targeted by trolls following the untimely demise of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, on June 14, 2020. A narrative was spread that Sushant, an outsider, had to give up his life due to the dynastic politics in Bollywood. Karan Johar was targeted the most and so was Alia Bhatt, Arjun Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha and many other star kids. Once films started to release on digital platforms and in cinemas, a ‘boycott movement’ emerged wherein trolls would insist that viewers should not see films in cinemas, especially if they starred star kids or Bollywood personalities they had issues with. As a result, several movies were targeted. Though it was having no effect on public’s choices, the movement continued till January 2023. The release of Pathaan ended the movement once and for all as the Shah Rukh Khan starrer was viciously attacked and yet, it emerged as the biggest grosser of Bollywood.

Interestingly, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, which has released today, touches upon the ‘boycott’ trend. A crucial track in the film deals with how an ad for Dhanlakshmi Sweets, owned by Dhanlakshmi Randhawa (Jaya Bachchan), is slammed by users for its sexist and regressive outlook. A boycott movement is started on social media and the backlash is so severe that the sales plummet, causing panic among the board members. How Dhanlakshmi Sweets comes out of this crisis makes for an interesting watch. Also, to see a track dealing with ‘boycott’ in a film by Karan Johar and starring Alia Bhatt, both of whom faced maximum brickbats from trolls, is quite interesting.

Besides Alia Bhatt and Jaya Bachchan, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani also stars Ranveer Singh, Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi, Kshitee Jog, Aamir Bashir, Anjali Anand, Tota Roy Choudhury, Churni Ganguly among others. It has music by Pritam Chakraborty.
