After speaking to the audience about his film Shiva (1990) on the first day of the Red Lorry Film Festival 2026, Ram Gopal Varma attended the second day of the festival as well. He interacted with fans after the screening of his much-loved horror flick, Bhoot (2003), and shared fascinating trivia about the film’s idea, audience reaction and a lot more.

Ram Gopal Varma revealed, “I had made Raat (1992), which is a father and daughter story, played by Akash Khurana and Revathy. The father doesn't know now what was happening to the daughter. With Bhoot, I made the same film, but this time, the characters were husband and wife! But since it's set in an apartment and the backdrop is different, people didn't realize!”
He also gave a breakdown about the scene in the film when the audience sees the ghost for the first time, “Since the film is called Bhoot and it's night time, the audience starts bracing that 'something is going to happen'. I then cut to a wide shot. We see her (Urmila Matondkar) coming down and heading to the kitchen. She has water and returns. The audience is wondering what would happen. Because it's a wide shot, their eyes began to dart around to see whether the ghost was present in the room or not (smiles). But they don't see anybody. When she climbs the stairs to return to the bedroom, I cut to a top-angle shot. Just when she comes close to the camera and when the audience assumes that the shot will cut and that the director was playing a mind game with them, this is when the camera tilts down and we see the Bhoot for the first time. I remember in Mumbai's Eros theatre, people jumped one foot into the air!”
He further explained, “When the camera is following Urmila, they'll expect something to jump into the frame anytime. They are anticipating it. This is what I mean by playing with the audience's mind – to create tension and make them feel that there's no danger. Just when they least expect it to come. It's a very obvious trick. I was constantly playing a mind game with the audience.”
