Ram Gopal Varma had an entertaining session on the first day of Red Lorry Film Festival 2026 before the screening of his cult film, Shiva (1990). RGV wowed the audience as he revealed how he became the first filmmaker to use stedicam in India.

Ram Gopal Varma said, “I was influenced in my teens by Steven Spielberg’s films. Also, one thing that struck me was the shot in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980) – the camera is following the kid on a bicycle. I managed to access some literature and learned that it was shot using a steadicam. One day, I was talking to somebody and expressed the desire to use the steadicam. That person said, ‘The steadicam is available in Hyderabad’! And to my shock, nobody was using it because they were not sure about it’s balance, focusing, etc. People have a tendency to be scared of anything new. This way I became the first guy in India to use a steadicam camera!”
The crowd broke into an applause. Ram Gopal Varma added, “It created a huge impact. Even the layman who saw the film could realize something unique in the shot. They didn’t know the rig’s name but it was spoken about a lot. Within a year of Shiva’s release, more than 20 steadicams were imported!”
