Filmmaker Priyadarshan, known for delivering some of Indian cinema’s most memorable comedy films, has revealed that he no longer enjoys making the genre that made him famous. In a recent interview, the veteran director admitted that he feels he has run out of fresh ideas and may soon step away from comedy altogether.

During a conversation with Pinkvilla, Priyadarshan said he now prefers directing serious films and feels reluctant to continue making comedies.

“Frankly speaking, I like to make serious films now. I don’t like making comedies anymore; I am forced to now. I think I have run out of ideas. I am finished. I don’t want to repeat what I did in the past. I will make one more comedy film, and I am done,” he said.

Interestingly, the director also revealed that Indian cricket star Virat Kohli is a fan of his 2007 comedy Dhol. According to Priyadarshan, Kohli once told him that he watches the film before important matches to relax.

Despite the film’s popularity today, Priyadarshan admitted that Dhol did not perform well when it first released. The director said the failure of the film, along with Khatta Meetha, affected him deeply at the time.

However, he now feels reassured that both films have found a second life on streaming platforms and television, where audiences continue to revisit them.

Over a career spanning more than four decades, Priyadarshan has directed numerous hit comedies that enjoy immense rewatch value. His filmography includes cult favourites such as Hera Pheri, Hungama, Hulchul and Bhagam Bhag, many of which remain popular among fans even years after their release.

While the filmmaker may be hesitant to continue with comedy, his legacy in the genre remains unmatched, with several of his films still regarded as classics in Indian popular cinema.
