It’s a known fact by now that the super-success of Pathaan has benefitted the entire film industry. The Shah Rukh Khan-starrer was released on January 25, 2023, and ever since, it has been breaking records. But what many are not aware of is that thanks to this blockbuster film, even the retail sector has laughed all the way to the bank.
As per a report in The Economic Times last week, malls across the country saw a rise in footfalls and also sales. The two reasons for it were the tempting discounts and the release of Pathaan. According to the report, this was a much-needed growth since there was a lull in sales for around three months.
Devarajan Iyer, the CEO of Lifestyle International, which has a chain of apparel stores in multiple locations, admitted that Pathaan’s release led to higher footfall in malls, which in turn helped the retailers and food service players as it led to a boost in demand.
Rajendra Kalkar, president-west at Phoenix Mills, which operates malls in Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru etc, also agreed that Pathaan was a “crowd puller”. He also added that customers are planning their day in the malls as per the show timings of the movie.
Not just the retail industry, but even for the restaurants, Pathaan turned out to be a godsend. Anjan Chatterjee, managing director at Speciality Restaurants, which runs restaurants like Mainland China, Asia Kitchen By Mainland China, Oh! Calcutta, Hoppipola, Sigree, Jungle Safari etc said that thanks to the combination of Pathaan and Republic Day offers, there was a 25-30% increase in the restaurant business.
Apart from Shah Rukh Khan, Pathaan also starred Deepika Padukone and John Abraham. It is directed by Siddharth Anand and backed by Aditya Chopra’s Yash Raj Films (YRF). Salman Khan reprised his role as Tiger and featured in a cameo appearance, which further enhanced the buzz for the film. The film is an all-time blockbuster and has collected Rs. 700 crores at the worldwide box office already. There’s still a lot of gas left in the tank and it is expected to cruise past the Rs. 900 crore mark.
