At the recent Next on Netflix event in Mumbai, Diljit Dosanjh shared intriguing insights into his forthcoming film Amar Singh Chamkila, helmed by director Imtiaz Ali. The actor-singer candidly revealed his initial apprehensions and enthusiasm about the project, which revolved around the Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila.
Dosanjh confessed to being initially sceptical about the idea of a Hindi film based on Amar Singh Chamkila's life. Donsajh said, “I thought I knew a lot about Chamkila before meeting him (Imtiaz Ali). When I got to know that a Bollywood film is being made on Chamkila, I thought what (kind) of film will they make. We have made a fictional film Jodi, as we didn’t have the rights. We also wondered how they would make Punjabi songs in Hindi as we can’t recreate it, as we had already made it.”
His doubts deepened when the release of Jodi was stalled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He further added, “Then after we made the film, COVID-19 happened and the film (Jodi) didn’t get released. I got a call from Imtiaz sir. I thought he would sue us, as he had the rights (to Chamkila’s story). We didn’t have it. But he said that he wanted to cast me in the film (Amar Singh Chamkila). I told him, ‘We already have the story. If you still think that you want to make a film with me, then we will see.’”
Dosanjh's perspective shifted upon hearing Ali's vision for the film. He acknowledged Ali's unique take on Chamkila's story, which highlighted facets he hadn't previously considered. He then added, “When I heard his perspective, it was completely different. It was a film about Chamkila. I felt I didn’t know Chamkila. When I heard the songs of Chamkila, I was amazed, as we had a lyricist, singer, and a legend (AR Rahman). However, Chamkila would himself write the song, compose the tunes and would sing it as well. He was that big an artiste. It was a big thing for us that his story was being told in such a big manner. When sir offered me the film, I surrendered to his vision.”
Parineeti Chopra also shared what she learnt from Dosanjh while working on the film. She said, “When I signed this film, it was truly a dream role. Before shooting this film, I used to think I speak Punjabi well and I could sing songs well. Then I met Diljit ji, I got a reality check in both departments. I was a student in front of Diljit. I used to check my diction with Diljit. (That) I am pronouncing the word correctly or not, or how should I do it? The biggest challenge for us was that we should not sing like us. We had to try to sing like Amarjot and Chamkila.”
Written and directed by Imtiaz Ali, the film reveals the untold true story of Punjab’s original rockstar, Amar Singh Chamkila, who emerged from the shadows of poverty and rose to the heights of popularity in the 80s, due to the sheer power of his music, angering many along the way, ultimately leading to his assassination at a young age of 27. A Window Seat Films production, it is slated to release on April 12 on Netflix.
