From Panchayat to Gullak: 5 comic web series that deserve a rewatch

en Bollywood News From Panchayat to Gullak: 5 comic web series that deserve a rewatch

Here are the best Hindi shows in the light-hearted genre on OTT

Web content got a boost in India, especially in the Hindi arena, with Sacred Games. But its actual boom happened in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. With theatres being shut for an indefinite period, the entertainment hungry crowd had no option but to binge on web shows. Hindi web content is mostly ruled by crime shows or murder mysteries. But along with them, the audience has also been served with a number of comic or light-hearted shows.

From Panchayat to Gullak: 5 comic web series that deserve a rewatch

Here are 5 comic Hindi web series that deserve a rewatch:

Panchayat

Talk about light-hearted Hindi shows and the first name that comes to our mind is TVF (The Viral Fever)’s Panchayat. Directed by Deepak Kumar Mishra and written by Chandan Kumar, the show stars Jitendra Kumar, Raghuvir Yadav, Neena Gupta, Chandan Roy, Faisal Malik and Saanvika. It tells the story of Abhishek Tripathi (Jitendra) who is forced to work in a village Panchayat in UP against his will. The show is about his funny encounters with the village head (Yadav) and others as he tries to make sense of the world he is in.

Panchayat proved that one doesn’t need to go overboard or try hard in making people laugh and entertained. It shows that even simple characters engaged in simple life can be a source of laughter. But along with that, both seasons of Panchayat also succeeded in giving timely messages without being too preachy.

Four More Shots Please

Amazon Prime Video’s Four More Shots Please is about four female friends, played by Sayani Gupta, Bani J, Kirti Kulhari and Maanvi Gagroo, as they go through the trials and tribulations of millennial life in urban India. The show has already had three seasons, directed by Anu Menon, Nupur Asthana and Joyeeta Patpatia respectively.

Four More Shots Please scores high because of its unapologetic nature, be it the bindaas characters of the four girls or the narrative and events portrayed in the show. This is enough to make it appealing for its target audience. Of course, the show is peppered by some witty and, again, unapologetic humour that has found a lot of takers.

Gullak

Gullak is a rare light-hearted comic show that portrays the real middle-class household of India in a realistic way. Starring Jameel Khan, Geetanjali Kulkarni, Vaibhav Raj Gupta and Harsh Mayar, the show portrays the issues an Indian middle-class family goes through in its daily life. The problems might not sound too serious, but they are surely relevant for the family in question. And while doing that, Gullak also makes you laugh and highlights the importance of simple joys of life, like having a relaxing Sunday.

Apart from the content, Gullak, which is created by TVF, is also lauded for its subtle yet entertaining performances from the lead cast. The goodness of the show has ensured that it has had three seasons so far.

TVF Tripling

This is yet another show from The Viral Fever that has found plenty of takers. In fact, TVF Tripling started off in 2016, which is much before the 2020 OTT boom in India. Developed by Sameer Saxena and written by Akarsh Khurana and Sumeet Vyas, the show has had three seasons so far and they all have received a positive response.

TVF Tripling is the story of three grown up siblings – Chandan (Sumeet Vyas), Chanchal (Maanvi Gagroo) and Chitwan (Amol Parashar). The show revolves around their bond and the varied types of issues they face in life. Its content and execution have made the show and its characters relatable. While the show is about the issues faced by the trio, it is peppered with some intelligent humour.

Chacha Vidhayak Hai Humare

A title like Chacha Vidhayak Hai Humare gives a feeling that the show is political in nature. While the show does deal with politics, at the core it’s the funny story of Ronny Pathak, played by popular stand-up comic artist Zakir Khan. Ronny is a popular guy in his group in the town of Bhopal. He often uses lies to increase his stature among his followers. The biggest one being that the local MLA (Member of Legislative Assembly) Ashwini Pathak (Abhimanyu Singh) is his uncle (hence, the title). Ronny’s bluff is out at the end of the first season while the second one deals with his bond with the MLA.

Created by Zakir Khan himself, the show is thoroughly entertaining in nature, thanks to a number of funny events and the political angle. The latter is played in a way that it doesn’t get into a serious mode. Zakir’s personal story about him being caught between two girls (Venus Singh and Onima Kashyap) is the icing on the cake.
