Oscar 2022: Jaden Smith reacts to his dad Will Smith winning his first Oscar and smacking Chris Rock onstage – “That’s How We Do It”

Will Smith’s son Jaden Smith took to social media to react to his father slapping comedian Chris Rock onstage at the 94th annual Academy Awards before winning Best Actor for his performance in King Richard. The heated exchange took place after the comedian made fun of his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

Soon after the broadcast ended, Jaden tweeted “And That’s How We Do It” on Sunday night, seemingly showing support for his dad before following up with tweeting a picture of himself seated in the backseat of the car wearing sunglasses writing, "My Dads Speech Made Me Cry.” He's since deleted the second tweet.

The incident at Sunday's awards night unraveled after Rock, who was presenting at the Oscars 2022, made light of Jada Pinkett Smith's hair loss, which she recently opened up about as a result of her years-long struggle with alopecia diagnosed in 2018. “Jada, I love ya. G.I. Jane 2, can't wait to see ya,” he joked poking fun at her hair. The quip prompted Jada to roll her eyes, but Rock quickly defended the crack at Jada's appearance, saying it was “a nice [joke],” despite being met with some uncomfortable reaction from the audience.

Will then rushed on to the stage and slapped the comedian leaving the audience and live viewers around the world stunned. “Oh wow,” said a seemingly taken-aback Rock as Will made his way back to his seat. “Will Smith just smacked the s— out of me.”

“Keep my wife's name out your f—ing mouth!” Will yelled up to the stage at Rock after taking his seat again. "Wow, dude, it was a G.I. Jane joke," said Rock, to which Will replied once again, "Keep my wife's name out your f—ing mouth!"

"I'm going to, okay?" Rock replied, before going on to say, "That was the ... greatest night in the history of television" and presenting the award. Moments after the outburst, Will won Best Actor for playing Richard Williams in King Richard. Addressing the controversial moment during his tearful acceptance speech, he apologized to everyone but Rock.

“I want to apologize to the Academy. I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees,” he said.

The actor, who was previously nominated for Ali and The Pursuit of Happyness, then joked, “Art imitates life: I look like the crazy father. Just like they said about Richard Williams. But love will make you do crazy things. Being able to love and care for my mother and my family, my wife ... Thank you for this honor. Thank you for this moment.”

Towards the end, adding a dose of humor, Will said “I'm hoping that the Academy invites me back," through tears as he let out a chuckle.
