Ahead of the release, Manoj Bajpayee spoke about why he believes the film could resonate strongly with younger audiences, particularly those unfamiliar with life before economic liberalisation. According to the actor, Governor offers an opportunity to understand a vastly different era, one that existed before many conveniences and consumer choices that are taken for granted today.

Reflecting on the film’s historical context, Bajpayee said, “They should know that there was a time when there were no soft drinks. There was no mall. So, we are talking about that time. In 1992, the first cricket match was telecast. So, we are talking about that time. So, this is going to be quite an education (for the younger generation)".

The actor also revealed the extent of his preparation for the role, explaining that understanding the economic realities of the period became an important part of the process. Bajpayee admitted that while economics was not his area of expertise, he invested significant effort in studying the subject to ensure he could accurately discuss the themes explored in the film.

Sharing details about his research, he said, “There is so much information, crucial information or basic information that has been left out. So, this is what I wanted to bring out. Basically, what is the balance of pay? So, things like this. Since I am not a big student of economics, it becomes very important and crucial for me that whatever I say has to be valid and perfect.”

Based on real-life events, Governor is set during one of the most challenging phases in India’s economic history. The film depicts a nation grappling with a severe financial crisis, while key decision-makers navigate difficult choices that would ultimately influence the country’s economic direction.

Directed by Chinmay Mandlekar and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah under the banner of Sunshine Pictures, the film is co-produced by Aashin A. Shah. The screenplay has been penned by Suvendu Bhattacharyjee, Saurabh Bharat, Ravi Asrani, and Vipul Amrutlal Shah. The project also features lyrics by Javed Akhtar and music composed by Amit Trivedi.

Governor is scheduled to release in cinemas on June 12, 2026.
