Maidaan trailer launch: Boney Kapoor raises laughs: “Laapataa Ladies aapne suna hai? With us, it was a case of Laapataa Writer. Their hair turned grey while writing the film”

The trailer of one of the most awaited films of 2024, Maidaan, was finally launched today at a multiplex in Mumbai. It was graced by the entire team of the film. The star of the event, however, was producer Boney Kapoor who raised laughs with his entertaining one-liners.

Boney Kapoor began by saying, “Football is a team game. Similarly, this film is also the work of a team, be it the DOP, camera operator, support cast, editor, writers, etc. There are many writers in the film. Some have been credited while some have been not. Kuch logon ko sirf humne ‘Thank You’ bola hai. Rumy Jafry ko humne sirf ‘Thank You’ bola hai.”

Boney continued, “In the writing team, Saiwyn Quadras and Ritesh Shah were there. Look at them (points at the writers). Kaise has rahe hai. In logon ke baal picture likhte likhte hi safed hue hai (laughs). I lost my hair while trying to find Ritesh Shah. Woh Laapataa ho gaya tha. Laapataa Ladies aapne suna hai? Main ek picture banaunga, Laapataa Writer! Whoever will find Ritesh will get a prize.”

Boney Kapoor, on a serious note, then said that he hopes that Maidaan manages to ignite an interest for football in India saying, “To supersede cricket is a difficult ask. I hope our film can at least break that barrier. How far it goes, God knows. But I hope jaise har galli mein cricket khela jaata hai, waise football bhi khela jaaye.”

He also went down memory lane, “I remember in childhood, Anil Kapoor, I and my whole family used to reside in Tilak Nagar. We neither had chappal nor shoes. Anil and I had chappals. Toh ek goal post banta tha meri chappalon se aur dusra goal post banta tha Anil ki chappalon se. Since then, we have been playing football. But after India’s victory in the 1983 Cricket World Cup, log football bhool gaye.”

He further stated, "In fact, we reached the semi finals in football in Melbourne Olympics which many are not aware. Then, we won the gold medal in Jakarta. It was the dream of our coach. The film is based on that man and Ajay Devgn has played him so convincingly that I feel that it is his best performance so far! He was also supported by a very hard-working star cast.”

Maidaan also stars Priyamani and Gajraj Rao and it releases this year on Eid.
