The screening of the much-loved Jhankaar Beats (2003) was held on February 6 as part of the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival. After the screening, director Sujoy Ghosh and actors Sanjay Suri and Shayan Munshi went down memory lane and spoke about the film and their memories. The session was moderated by Rangita Pritish Nandy, who was the producer of Jhankaar Beats and she, too, shared her experiences.
Sanjay Suri revealed, “Sujoy met me at Dosa Diner in Andheri. He told me that he was making Jhankaar Beats and asked me to read the script. It was the first and the last script I read in a restaurant. I think I should read more scripts in restaurants (smiles). It was bizarre, but I loved it. It was also ahead of its time. I feel that today, you can't make this film because the legal team would first read the script! You can't talk about condoms so openly.”
Sanjay revealed, “I was working with an actor and he said he had two copies of Jhankaar Beats. He said, 'Ek kharab ho jaata tha toh main backup rakhta tha'. He's 31 right now and he said through Jhankaar Beats, he learned about condoms.”
Meanwhile, Sujoy Ghosh added, “The one person I am missing right now is the late Mr Pritish Nandy. That man read the script and said, 'I am doing it'. It took me at least an hour to understand what he meant by that! He had b**ls of steel!”
At this point, Rangita Pritish Nandy raised laughs as she told Sujoy, “After meeting you, my father just said, 'I don't know what he (Sujoy) said. But just figure it out and make a film with him'!”
Jhankaar Beats also starred Rahul Bose, Juhi Chawla, Rinke Khanna and Riya Sen.
