The ongoing debate around fixed working hours in the film industry continues to spark conversations, and Kareena Kapoor Khan has now voiced her support for Deepika Padukone amid discussions around the latter’s reported demand for an eight-hour work shift.
During a recent interaction with The Hollywood Reporter India, Kareena spoke about the importance of setting clear boundaries when it comes to balancing work and personal life. The actress, who is a mother to two sons, said that women should feel comfortable expressing their needs to producers and filmmakers in advance. Kareena said, “As a woman, if you want to give time to your children, you should have the freedom to say, ‘This is what I want. I can only work this number of hours.’” She added that such conditions are reasonable as long as they are communicated before the film begins production.
Sharing her own experience, the actress recalled how careful planning helped her manage both work and motherhood during the shoot of The Buckingham Murders. Kareena explained, “Everything needs to be really well planned and you have to be very clear right from the beginning.” She further elaborated on how scheduling adjustments allowed her to balance work commitments with family time. “This is because I have two children. I need to come back. They would shoot other portions while I came back to visit them, and then I would return and finish the rest of the shoot,” she said, adding that the team was understanding of her situation. Kareena also highlighted the role of support systems at home, noting that managing a demanding career alongside parenting often requires coordination between partners. “When you’re in a marriage and both partners are working, there has to be an understanding. We can’t both be working and leave the children alone,” she said.
Deepika had earlier spoken about the issue in the context of working mothers, stating that the industry needs to rethink its approach to work culture. “We’ve normalised overworking. We mistake burnout for commitment. Eight hours of work a day is enough for the human body and mind,” she said in an earlier interview. The conversation around structured working hours continues to divide opinion in the industry, but Kareena’s remarks have added another voice advocating for better work-life balance in Bollywood.
