When Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt were scouting for a leading lady in Jannat 2, they had zeroed in on Paoli Dam, a happening actress in Bengali cinema, after things didn’t quite work out with Prachi Desai. However, after a sudden shift in developments, ex-Miss India Esha Gupta stepped in instead, hence making one wonder if Dam’s debut in Bollywood was jinxed. Thankfully that was not the case to be for the dusky actress who, after scintillating with her bold and erotic act in films coming from the East, has now been signed by Vivek Agnihotri who would be launching her in Hate Story.
“Yes, Paoli has been signed for Hate Story. It is being designed as Bollywood’s first bona fide erotic thriller. The film required someone who didn’t come with a baggage of an image and was game for some explicit scenes that required one to shed her inhibitions. However, all of it had to be dealt in a classy way and hence a real actress with a great body and attitude to boast was needed. This is where Paoli fitted the bill”, says a source close to Vivek.
Hailing from Kolkata, Paoli had worked in quite a few middle of the road films with directors like Rituparno Ghosh and Gautam Ghose and has rubbed shoulders with top actors like Prosenjit Chatterjee, Jisshu Sengupta and Parambrata Chatterjee. Now in Hate Story, she would have Gulshan Deviah as her co-star.
“Vikram Bhatt (who has written Hate Story and would also be presenting it) as well as (director) Vivek Agnihotri feel that it is time to bring to fore talented newcomers. While Paoli was an immediate selection, Gulshan too became an automatic choice once his bravura act in films like Shaitan, That Girl In Yellow Boots and Dum Maaro Dum caught everyone’s attention. He is required to be a very strong negative lead in the film and Vikram along with Vivek are sure that Paoli and he would set the screen on fire”, the source continues.
As for the fact that Paoli has moved on from Mahesh Bhatt to him, Vivek has a slightly different story to tell. “I don’t know whether it is anyone’s loss or not but Paoli was actually signed by us first. She was short-listed way back in August and it was only after word of mouth spread around her being on board got Mahesh and Mukesh got interested. What happened with them isn’t something that I am worrying about but for Hate Story, Paoli is the best choice. She is a fabulous actor and really in demand here at Bollywood. I am glad that Vikram and I would be the ones to actually launch her here.”
Hate Story would be shot in an extended schedule at Delhi starting first week of November.
