Veteran actor Hema Malini delivered an emotional speech at the prayer meet held for her late husband, legendary actor Dharmendra, where she reflected on their long journey together both on and off screen. Surrounded by her daughters Esha Deol and Ahana Deol, Hema spoke with deep affection as she remembered the man she lovingly called her true life partner.
She honoured Dharmendra’s humility, sharing how his grounded nature touched everyone he met. She said, “He was always very down to earth and this was the quality everyone loved about him; whether people were from any walk of life – young or old, rich or poor, one’s own or strangers – he spoke to everyone with great love, affection and respect, such was Dharam ji as a person.”
Hema also recalled their five-decade-long association in cinema. “My association with Dharmendra ji is of 57 years; from the time I entered the film industry I mostly got the opportunity to work with him, we did nearly 45 films together and out of those, 25 films or more became superhit films, so together we were considered a hit pair.”

She highlighted his versatility, praising the range of characters he portrayed with effortless charm. “In a film like Razia Sultan he played Yakub, and along with that in the Indo-Russian production Alibaba Aur 40 Chor he played Alibaba, and by doing such roles he won the hearts of Russian fans as well; with his versatile performances he entertained audiences across the whole world.”
Hema fondly remembered a lesser-known side of Dharmendra the poet within him. “Gradually, another hidden aspect of Dharmendra ji’s personality emerged when he began reciting Urdu poetry; his special trait was that in any situation he would immediately recite a couplet suited to the moment, that was his uniqueness.” She added, “Many times I also told him that since he writes so well, he should publish it in the form of a book.”
Her emotional tribute reflected not only the legacy Dharmendra leaves behind but also the profound companionship they shared, one built on respect, creativity, and unwavering love.
