Varun Dhawan, Pooja Hegde, Mrunal Thakur, David Dhawan, Ramesh Taurani, Anu Malik, Sameer, Maniesh Paul, Chunky Panday, Rajesh Kumar, Jimmy Sheirgill, Rajat Rawail, Ali Asgar, Girish Kumar, Kumar Taurani, writer Rumy Jafry, and cinematographer Ayananka Bose attended the trailer launch of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai in Mumbai on May 23. Sameer and Rumy Jafry went down memory lane and shared hilarious anecdotes.
Sameer began by talking about Varun, “Whenever I see you, I remember your childhood. Your dad may not have harassed you so much, but he harassed me a lot! David Dhawan ki picture likhna matlab uss din mera blood pressure kam se kam 20-degree upar chadha hota tha! This man doesn’t want a normal song. Anu and I used to wonder, ‘David ka gaana aa gaya. Ab kya kiya jaaye?’.”
He then wrote how he wrote the song ‘Ishq Sona Hai’ in Biwi No 1 (1999), “‘Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai’ yeh line toh aa gayi. This line is not enough to satisfy David, as he felt that the song didn’t have the required punch. It’s only when I wrote ‘Ishq chandi hai, ishq sona hai’ ki David ka gaana ho gaya, bas!”
Sameer raised laughs as he revealed, “Iss aadmi ne mujhse galat kaam karwaya tha. He made me write a song. I told him, ‘Mukhda is a super-hit, but it won’t go well with your film’. Now, David used to famously say, ‘Situation gayi tel laga ne. Tu mujhe hit gaane de’. So, I wrote ‘Main Tujhko Bhaga Laaya Hoon Tere Ghar Se, Tere Baap Ke Darr Se’. But there’s no baap in that picture!”
David Dhawan clarified, “But there was a dada in the film. Dada is also like baap, isn’t he?” On a serious note, Sameer added, “Since his first film, I have been writing for him. 95% of the songs of his films are penned by me (smiles).”
Varun Dhawan then raised laughs as he talked about Rumy Jafry, “The first call my father makes every morning is to Rumy Jafry. He doesn’t even say ‘Good morning’ to my mother. But I have definitely heard him say, ‘Haan Rumy, uth gaya?’. I have been hearing this for 30 years. Yeh bechare uthe bhi nahin honge toh bhi uth hi jaayenge.”
Rumy revealed, “When I wrote the first film for David saab, I didn’t know that I’ll get a family here. David saab, Varun, Rohit, Laali Bhabhi, Anil saab, Laali bhabhi’s sisters are like my own family members.”
Like Sameer, he also shared a funny story, “For Judwaa (1997), he recorded a song ‘Oonchi Hai Building Lift Teri Bandh Hai’. Sajid Nadiadwala asked me, ‘What is this song that David has recorded. The girl lives in a bungalow’! I told David saab, ‘Sajid bangle mein lift dhoond raha hai’. He said, ‘Usko bol mere maamle mein bole nahin. Super-hit gaana bana raha hoon’!”
Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai releases in cinemas on June 5.
