Deepika Padukone will soon be seen on screen in a full fledges role after two years. The actress is gearing up for the release of her film Gehraiyaan directed by Shakun Batra. The film also stars Ananya Panday, Siddhant Chaturvedi, and Dhairya Karwa. Gehraiyaan is a relationship drama that looks beneath the surface of complex modern relationships, adulting, letting go, and taking control of ones’ life path.

Deepika Padukone plays the role of a 30-year-old Alisha Khanna whose six-year-long relationship has grown monotonous and she has hit roadblocks in her career. She eventually forms a physical relationship with her cousin’s fiance which leads to several problems. At the trailer launch event of the film, while talking about the character, Deepika said, "You've never seen me play a character like this. I don't think you've seen any Indian actor play a character like this. And I can also confidently say that India has never seen a film like this. So I think it's many firsts. Shakun's great at this, this is really his forte, which is love and relationships. And when I say relationships, I don't mean just boyfriend,-girlfriend relationships. It could be brother and sister, it could be two sisters, it could be friends."

"I think he's really the best when it comes to those dynamics and really saying it as it is. He watches without a lens of judgment and watches different kinds of people. This world is really full of different kinds of people in different kinds of relationships. And he really is the best person, you know, to bring that out on screen. So whether it's the film or whether it's the characters, not just mine, but for everyone's we certainly haven't seen something like this. So that's definitely a first and I think as Sid said, there's really no reference point in that sense. So one has to really dig deep and just trust what the director wants from you and what they are trying to extract from you," she added.

While Deepika has some intimate scenes with Siddhant in the film, the actress does not want to call her character bold. "I want to say bold but I also don’t want to say bold because of the way we understand bold in our films and in the characters that we’ve seen. I’d say raw. For me, this character is a lot more raw, a lot more real than some of the other characters that I have played just emotionally, completely stripped, completely naked in that sense, completely vulnerable," she said.

"To be able to do that onscreen, it had to come from a very very deep place. So, yes, it’s not to say I haven’t experienced that before. I think to this extent where I had to really dig deep and visit places that aren’t really the most pleasant from my own life as well as dealing with mental health issues. So, I think all of that put together, just came from a very very deep place," she added.

Jointly produced by Viacom18 Studios, Dharma Productions, and Shakun Batra’s Jouska Films, Gehraiyaan will have its World Premiere exclusively on Amazon Prime Video on February 11, 2022, in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
