The trend of remakes started in mainstream Bollywood around a decade ago. There have been quite a few success stories for some of these remakes. But we can’t ignore that in today’s times, remakes have reached a saturation point. They haven’t been working at the box office and are also looked down upon by a section of the audience.
EXCLUSIVE: Taran Adarsh on remakes, “Haath jodke kehta hoon, remakes band kariye”
In an exclusive video interview with Bollywood Hungama, veteran trade analyst Taran Adarsh also echoed similar sentiments. Speaking about the failure of Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha, which was the remake of the Hollywood classic Forrest Gump, he said, “Pehli baat toh please, main haath jodke kehta hoon, remakes band kariye (I urge you with folded hands to stop making remakes). This goes for all actors; I am not saying this only from Aamir’s point of view. He remade a Hollywood film. In our industry we have remade so many south films. I would join my hands and urge every actor to stop this.”
Explaining his stand, he added, “In today’s times, people want to watch original films. There is no dearth of writers, provided they get encouraged to write good stories; think of something new in commercial parameters. This is necessary for all actors.”
Pathaan has become the biggest Bollywood blockbuster. Adarsh pointed out that it wasn’t a remake. “Shah Rukh Khan didn’t do a remake. Pathaan was an original film,” he said. “You can point out that this wasn’t good or that wasn’t, but the film did well. It did well because of the originality in terms of the content. Action and songs were excellent. And what to say about Shah Rukh Khan? Deepika Padukone was very good. John Abraham was fantastic. And the icing on the cake was Salman Khan.”
Adarsh added that it isn’t a crime to remake films and it has been done by actors of a lot of generations. “There was a time when all actors did remake,” he said. “Dilip (Kumar) sahab did Ram Aur Shyam. Similarly, Amit ji (Amitabh Bachchan), Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra and Shatrughan Sinha did. I am not denying that. But now people watch (the original) on OTT. As soon as the tag of remake is attached to it, you lose half of your audience.”
The Ajay Devgn-starrer Drishyam 2 has turned out to be an exception. Despite the film being a remake, it went onto earn praises and become a blockbuster. Adarsh also singled out that movie for being a well-made remake. He pointed out that it wasn’t a copy-paste remake, and it had moments that weren’t there in the original Malayalam movie. He gave the example of the scene where Akshaye Khanna’s character of a cop visiting Devgn’s residence and scaring his wife and daughter in a subtle manner.
“That scene wasn’t there in the original,” said Adarsh. “I started thinking what an incredible scene this is. There were some more (original) scenes as well. This becomes a novel aspect for the audience that has seen the original.”
