EXCLUSIVE: “Are Sunny Singh and Kriti Kharbanda a pair in Risky Romeo?” Director Abir Sengupta teases with details of their “retro” look; shares update on its release date

Abir Sengupta's upcoming film, Risky Romeo, has been shrouded in secrecy since its announcement last year. The neo-noir comic tragedy, starring Sunny Singh and Kriti Kharbanda, has completed filming in Kolkata, but the release date remains a mystery. Bollywood Hungama, however, managed to snag some exclusive details from the usually tight-lipped director.

Abir Sengupta, known for his introverted nature, opened up a bit about his upcoming Hindi feature film during an exclusive conversation with us. When pressed about the release date, Abir asserted, “I'm taking it slow, because it's a very different and unusual genre we have attempted with this film. I am taking my own sweet time editing the film with my editor. As we are editing the film, we are also discovering the film in so many ways. I don't want to rush with the whole thing. I told my producers to give me some time on the edit first. Once the edit is locked, and that's when we can start planning.”

The casting of Sunny Singh and Kriti Kharbanda has piqued audience interest. Sengupta, however, threw a curveball. "Are they really a pair in the film?" he asks playfully. He elaborates, "Just because we have a male and female lead doesn't necessarily mean they're a pair. They're both brilliant actors, but are they really a pair?” Abir remains tight-lipped about the plot but promises "both actors bring a similar energy to the script."

Sunny Singh, playing the titular character of Romeo, will sport a unique retro look, according to Abir. The filmmaker informed us, “Sunny will be seen in a very retro kind of a look in the film, which we haven't seen in the cinema. The kind of recreation that Sunny's character has, his getup, and his appearance is something that we haven't seen. I'm very confident about that even Kriti. Her look is also very different. It's very retro, at the same time very different from the kind of retro that we recreate.”

Besides being the director, Abir is also producing Risky Romeo with Anushree Mehta under their banner Jaadugar Films in association with Priyanka Mehrotra and Rameshchandra Yadav of PR Motion Pictures.
