Ram Gopal Varma might not have given a memorable film since years. But that doesn’t mean we can discredit his earlier works. In fact, RGV is one of the rare filmmakers who didn’t think about trends and went ahead and made films that were unconventional for their times and at the same time had commercial elements.

As Ram Gopal Varma celebrates his 62nd birthday today, here’s revisiting some of his best works (in order of release dates).

Shiva (1989):

RGV's directorial debut, Shiva is a gritty crime drama set in a college campus. The film, which starred Nagarjuna in the head, received widespread acclaim for its realistic portrayal of violence and youth culture and is considered a cult classic in Indian cinema. The movie became a perfect launch for RGV.

Rangeela (1995):

This romantic drama marked RGV's foray into mainstream Bollywood cinema. Starring Aamir Khan, Urmila Matondkar, and Jackie Shroff, Rangeela was both a critical and commercial success, known for its vibrant music and colorful visuals. In fact, some of the dialogues in the film mouthed by Aamir are still popular.

Satya (1998):

Considered one of RGV's finest works, Satya is a crime thriller that revolves around the Mumbai underworld and it starred Chakravarthy, Manoj Bajpayee, Urmila Matondkar and Shefali Shah. The film was critically acclaimed for its realistic portrayal of the criminal underworld and won several awards. It made Bajpayee and his character Bhiku Mhatre known name.

Kaun (1999)

A psychological thriller, Kaun is a suspenseful tale set in a deserted house during a stormy night. Starring Urmila Matondkar and Manoj Bajpayee, the film keeps the audience on the edge of their seats with its suspenseful narrative and unexpected twists. Even after 25 years, Kaun continues to thrill and scare the audience.

Sarkar (2005):

Inspired by The Godfather, Sarkar is a political crime thriller that follows the journey of a powerful political figure called Subhash Nagre aka Sarkar and his family. Starring Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role, the film was well-received for its gripping storyline and strong performances. It is also considered one of the best works of Abhishek Bachchan, who played Sakar’s son Shankar.
