The period of December-January is special for Suneel Darshan. 3 of his films have been released in the last month of the year. While the Sunny Deol-Karisma Kapoor starrer Ajay (1996) released on December 27, Jaanwar (1999), starring Akshay Kumar and Karisma Kapoor, arrived on December 24 in cinemas. Dosti: Friends Forever (2003) was released in theatres on December 23. Lastly, Talaash - The Hunt Begins (2003) was the first of release of 2003, as it hit theatres on January 3. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Suneel Darshan spoke about this aspect and a lot more.
When asked about his fondness for this period, Suneel Darshan said, “Earlier, Christmas and New Year were a great time for people to go to cinema halls. Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai (2000) came in this period as well. You just feel, ‘This is a good time. Let’s get your film in the cinema halls’.”
Interestingly, he has worked with Karisma Kapoor in 5 films – Ajay, Jaanwar, Ek Rishtaa: The Bond Of Love (2001), Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya (2002) and Mere Jeevan Saathi (2006). Suneel then opened up about his bond with the talented and beautiful actress, “When I started working on Ajay, she was not a top actress. By the time Ajay was completed and released, she had slowly become a top actor. When I signed Ajay, it starred Sunny Deol and Juhi Chawla. I completed two schedules, one in the Netherlands and the other in Switzerland. I even shot 3 complete songs. But then I realized that getting Juhi’s dates was becoming a challenge. She had been slotted as the number one actress by then. That’s when I thought ‘Why spoil the film?’.”
Suneel Darshan then said, “Then, Juhi was eased out and that’s when I took Karisma. She was younger and enthusiastic. When actors are taking off in their careers, there’s a different energy that they come with. She was evolving from a girl to a woman. That’s how she got cast.”
Suneel continued, “The journey with Karisma has been wonderful. We did 5 films together and she contributed substantially with her presence and performance. The faith we had in each other was quite important.”
Suneel Darshan also remarked, “When I approached her to do Jaanwar, she always had a choice. She was the number one heroine by then. Hence, I was not sure if she would sign the film or not. But when I approached her, the first thing she told me was, ‘Of course, I’ll be there’. Jaanwar was not a heroine-centric film like, say Raja Hindustani (1996) or Biwi No 1 (1999). Jaanwar revolved around the male character. At that time, Akshay was going through a low phase in his career. Yet, she signed the film. I appreciate that about her.”
