Sanjana Sanghi made her debut as a main lead in Dil Bechara, where she was paired opposite Sushant Singh Rajput. But her first appearance in a film as a child artiste happened in Imtiaz Ali’s iconic Rockstar. She played the role of Nargis Fakhri’s younger sister Mandy in the film starring Ranbir Kapoor in the titular role.
In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama, Sanjana looked back at Rockstar with fondness. “That was my magical, unplanned entry into the movies,” she said. “I never thought growing up as a regular girl in Delhi that I will be able to make it to Bollywood. It’s not like when I was three years old, I dreamt of becoming an actor in that way. But I was always a trained Kathak dancer.”
It was the known casting director Mukesh Chhabra who discovered her at her school campus. “I was in Modern School in Delhi. They were looking for a Kashmiri-looking girl to be cast as Mandy across schools in Delhi, Chandigarh and north India. He came to my school campus and asked my theatre teacher to suggest some girls who he might think would be right for the part. I got randomly pulled out of a dance rehearsal and gave an audition out of the blue on my campus.”
That moment changed Sanjana’s life at the age of just 13. “I didn’t even know what the word ‘audition’ meant at that time,” she said. “But I gave it my all and two days later, we literally got a call from Imtiaz sir’s team that I have been finalized. So, within three days I was in Dharamshala with Ranbir, Imtiaz sir on Rockstar’s sets. It was very quick. I could not have imagined. Life changed in every which way. Rockstar went onto become a cult film. I remember when I came back after the shoot, suddenly everyone knew you. You are a teenager and you have suddenly starred in a film. So, school life became very different after Rockstar.”
From then onwards, Sanjana started leading a “semi-professional” life. “I was managing academics and school but I was also doing lots of ads and small parts in films. So, I was always taking permission from my Principal, going for shoots and life became very very different and dynamic from then on,” she concluded.
