Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has once again voiced his admiration for Dhurandhar and its director Aditya Dhar, calling the film a refreshing departure from conventional hero-driven spectacles.
Speaking about the film’s structure, Varma noted that on the surface, Dhurandhar follows a familiar commercial template. “It has a very similar template to what we think of as the so-called hero films. There’s a hero, there’s a heroine, there’s a villain. The hero is working for a lofty cause and it has music — everything a normal template hero film has,” he said.
However, he was quick to underline the difference in execution. “The way Aditya has done it is so realistic — the exact opposite of what we are used to seeing. We are used to loud background scores, slow motion entries and people clapping and throwing coins without the hero doing anything. Here, the hero is in the story. The story is dominating the hero and is growing in the process of what’s happening.”
Varma also pointed out that other characters in the film are equally impactful. “All the characters are looking almost as effective, if not more effective than the protagonist,” he observed, suggesting that the narrative focus remains firmly on storytelling rather than star projection.
When asked whether he was surprised by the film’s box office performance, Varma responded, “I don’t know if surprise is the right word, but I would say I was very happy. This kind of film can reach those numbers, which means there is room for intelligent cinema.”
He added that many filmmakers tend to simplify content to appeal to a perceived mass audience. “Other films dumb it down. They just want to cater to the so-called masses with masala. I think he killed it,” Varma said, praising Dhar’s approach.
The second part of the film Dhurandhar: The Revenge is slated for release on March 19 and will face a box office clash with Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown Ups.
