In an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Hungama, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma shared his candid views on Artificial Intelligence and its growing role in cinema, describing it as a force that could fundamentally alter — or even dismantle — the existing film industry.
When asked whether he is working on a project using AI, Varma clarified, “No, I am using AI extensively.” He added that while there are still technical limitations, he believes the shift is inevitable. “It takes time for it to completely evolve, but we are moving towards where the industry will not exist. I am very sure about it.”
Varma compared AI’s current phase in cinema to a natural phenomenon gathering force. “Right now, a lot of people don’t know. They are just looking at it as a fun tool. They are getting surprised at the things it does,” he said. “I think it’s like the tsunami is going back now. You don’t realise it till the tsunami comes forward.”
According to him, the real disruption is yet to arrive. “When it hits everyone — what it actually can do — that is when the tsunami will come and it will wash away the industry,” he stated.
Varma does not believe the turning point will be a single AI-made film, but rather the rapid advancement of AI applications capable of generating high-quality visuals and performances. “It’s about the quality of what apps can do, where they will realise actors and the rest of the industry are not needed because they’re eventually creating an image in real time to be projected on screen,” he explained.
For Varma, the distinction between AI-generated imagery and traditional filmmaking may soon become irrelevant. “If it’s going to be projected on screen, what is the difference between AI-generated content if the quality is as good? It’s as simple as that,” he concluded.
