EXCLUSIVE: Ram Gopal Varma calls out film industry’s “denial” over AI; says Seedance could make big films but not Saiyaara yet

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has weighed in on the growing debate around artificial intelligence in cinema, calling the technology a positive development and urging the film industry to stop resisting change. In a recent conversation with Bollywood Hungama following the launch of Seedance 2.0, Varma spoke at length about how rapidly AI tools are evolving and how they could reshape filmmaking.

Addressing concerns that scripts are increasingly being filtered or even generated by AI systems, Varma said he views the shift optimistically. “I think it is positive,” he said, adding that the larger goal of technology has always been to outsource work to machines so that humans can free up time and energy.

He argued that AI could function as a superior advisor in creative processes. According to him, actors can sometimes be influenced by personal relationships with writers or directors, or may lack the analytical ability to fully assess material. In such cases, he suggested, turning to a more advanced system for guidance is logical. “If you are giving that job to a far superior being as an advisor, why wouldn’t you do that?” he remarked.

Speaking about the current capabilities of AI-generated visuals, Varma observed that most of what has been seen so far appears geared towards large-scale, big-budget spectacles. While he has not yet encountered what he termed a “proper normal scene” created entirely through AI, he believes the technology is advancing quickly enough to handle mainstream commercial cinema. He said it could potentially mount a Rs 400 crores film.

However, he questioned whether AI can yet replicate deeply human stories. Referring to emotionally driven narratives like Saiyaara, Varma noted that such films are rooted in human experience. Still, he cautioned against assuming that AI will remain limited in this regard. “Three weeks back also we didn’t know about Seedance,” he said, underlining the pace at which the technology is progressing.

Varma also challenged the idea that certain aspects of filmmaking will always require a human touch. “That is what we’ve been grown to think. Now, if we see this, we are living in denial,” he said. According to him, the real turning point will come when audiences can no longer distinguish between AI-created performances and those delivered by human actors. “If we can’t make out a difference between an AI-created human and a human, then the game is over,” he added.

As debates intensify within the industry—between those who see AI as a creative tool and those who fear job losses—Varma’s comments place him firmly in the camp advocating adaptation over resistance.
