Veteran actor Mushtaq Khan has spoken about how the 1993 film Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke opened the doors of light-hearted comedy characters for him. Khan, who played the role of Bhagwati Prasad Mishra in the film, said that his two films were ready to release simultaneously, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke and Sir.
"I had a different role. And there were two films that I completed together, one released ahead of the other," Khan told Bollywood Hungama. "The first film was centred on gangsters, in which I played a negative role. It was a film featuring me, Paresh Rawal, and Naseeruddin Shah. In that film, I get my throat slit, and I engage in wrongdoing. That film was also a big hit.”
He further added, “So, there was one film, Sir, and the other film was Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke. Both were ready simultaneously, and everyone suggested that we release Sir's film first. Aamir Khan and his father's film was Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke. So, it was decided to release Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke after Sir.”
As the conversation progressed further, Khan said, “Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke surpassed Sir because it was a comedy film starring Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla," Khan said. "There was a song in it, 'Ghunghat Ki Aad Se Dilbar Ka.' This song was shot in Udaipur. When the trailer played in theatres, people would throw money. So, at that time, we felt that this film... It is going to be a hit.”
He continued, “What happened was that when both Sir and Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke were released, most people liked Hum Hai Rahi Pyar Ke. And because of my character as Mishra ji in it, they followed it, and I started getting more and more light-hearted comedy roles."
