In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Madhuri Dixit spoke about stepping into one of the boldest roles of her career for the upcoming series Mrs. Deshpande. The actress revealed how the concept immediately intrigued her and why she felt compelled to explore such an unconventional character.
Her First Reaction to Being Approached for Mrs. Deshpande
Madhuri recalled the moment she learned about the project and how the idea instantly captured her attention. She said, "Well I was told that they are making this series Mrs. Deshpande and it's about the serial killer and I was like ‘Wait a minute, stop there, what?’ They said yes, and I am like I want to hear this; I didn't want to hear anything else, I said, I just want to hear this now."
The unique premise and the unexpected twist of portraying a female serial killer encouraged her to dive deeper into the narrative.
On Working with Nagesh Kukunoor
The actress also expressed admiration for renowned filmmaker Nagesh Kukunoor, whose involvement further solidified her decision to take on the role. She said, "He is a fantastic filmmaker. I have seen his films, I have seen his series and I'm very impressed with his work. I think he works very doggedly like his vision is very clear when he makes a film, and because he was at the helm… It's such a different role for me to play that I first of all said yes to hearing the narration, and once I heard the narration, once I heard their vision, then I was assured that it will be made in a very good way, I'll be presented in a very proper way; the way it should be done. All those assurances made it even easier for me to say yes."
Her confidence in filmmaker Nagesh Kukunoor’s vision made her feel secure about how this challenging character would be portrayed onscreen.
How Her Family Reacted to Her Playing a Serial Killer
Madhuri shared that her family was initially surprised when she discussed the role with them as the concept of a female serial killer is rarely explored in Indian entertainment. She said, "Well see first of all there has never been a woman serial killer in India, like a series made over. I don't know if there was a real, yes they have been in real life. But there's never anything made on a woman serial killer, so everybody was like taken a back at first. What, woman serial killer? I said ya. So then that kind of dialogue started in family and then I told them what it was all about and they found it very exciting."
Their shock soon turned into curiosity and excitement once she explained the depth and uniqueness of the role.
