The Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia D’Souza starrer Ved has managed to win the hearts of the audience. The Marathi film has started its business on a good note. Among many others, it's Jiya Shankar’s stint that is grabbing the attention. For the unversed, Jiya Shankar became a household name after her performance in the popular Sab TV show, Kaatelal & Sons. In a conversation with Bollywood Hungama, the debutante opened up on her acting journey while speaking her mind about various aspects of the entertainment industry. Having said that, here are the excerpts from her conversation with us.
What is your thought process when you say ‘Yes’ to a project given that each of the projects you have done so far was different?
So luckily, whatever has come to me has always been very different and exciting. It just happened to me. And, you know, lately, like how it's going on. When I did the film, I was also hosting a show. This year has been so exciting. Like after Kaatelal and Sons, I hosted a show. Something that was very, very new to me. I have stage fever and I never thought that I'll be able to host a show and on that show itself, I played different characters. And then the film happens, which is completely different. And now this supernatural show. Even this character is something very different from what I have done before. So, everything is just so different from each other. And I'm just very, very grateful that I am getting all these opportunities. And people who know me in the industry who are offering me all these characters know my potential. And, I'm able to give justice to each and every one.
What is your expectation from Ved?
Since it's a theatrical release, I am only hoping that it reaches a larger audience. I'm just hoping that people get to see the kind of performer I am and how I look on screen. And from there, new opportunities will open for me. At the moment, I just want to reach a larger audience.
How did you bag your role in Ved?
It was (because of) Rohan Mapushkar; he is a casting director. He called me and asked me if I would be interested in doing a Marathi film. I said yeah if the content is good if the character is good. And then he said it's with Riteish Deshmukh. I was like okay, I would still want to know the story and my character, and only then I would be keen on going forward with it. Because that's what matters to me the most. Even if it's a small project, if my character is good, if that gives me a kick, doing what I do, then I will go for it.
And so, then this happened and that's when I, Riteish and he gave me the entire narration of the film and after that, he was like you take your time. I was like, no, it's perfect. This is what I wanted to know. I got my answers and I would love to go forward with it if it is all this what he wants as well. And just straight away he was like welcome on board. I asked him if I have to give an audition for it and he told me, I have seen your work and I know that you'll be able to pull it off easily.
What’s your take on the shelf life of actresses in the entertainment industry?
There should be no limit to the age when it comes to actors and stories and concepts. I'm amazed that even people are coming up with unique concepts.
Like Madhuri Dixit, she came back with a bang. Her web show, The Fame Game, is amazing. Then Sridevi ma'am left us with something to remember her by for our entire life. And even now if we look at television as well Anupama is the number one show whose female face is 40 plus. So, it's amazing how real concepts are replacing conventional stories. At the same time, it gives opportunities to everybody.
