Chandan Roy Sanyal, who recently impressed one and all with his performance as Bhopa Swami in Ek Badnaam Aashram Season 3 Part 2, has been doing some great work from the very start. It is assumed that Vishal Bhardwaj’s Kaminey (2009) was his first film. However, not many are aware that he has also worked in Rang De Basanti (2006), in the role of Batukeshwar Dutt. However, the focus was more on the other characters in the film and hence, many might not have noticed him. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Chandan Roy Sanyal opened up on this aspect.

He said, “I was a novice at that time. I was just out of college and the film fell on my lap. I remember several people were auditioning for it. After a couple of months, I got the part. For me, it was not a conscious choice or which role I was playing in it. It was like ‘Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra is making a film and it has Aamir Khan….chalo chalo’! I never thought what my career would be like after doing this film. I was just a pure theatre actor who got a chance accidentally to work in this film.”

Chandan Roy Sanyal further said, “It was a pleasure to see Aamir Khan and Waheeda Rehman working on the set, cinematographer Binod Pradhan lighting a scene and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra directing the film. Mere liye yeh sab dekhna bahut mazedaar tha. Even shooting for it was fun, especially throwing pamphlets in the air with Siddharth. Later, I got Kaminey through an audition. Honey Trehan called me.”

When asked about his experience of working with Aamir Khan, he began by saying, “I didn’t have talkie scenes with most of them. But I had a presence in many sequences. I didn’t have much interaction with them. I remember one particular incident very clearly. We were shooting for a scene and my shirt button was broken. Khan saab noticed it. I was standing next to him. He called the costume person and said, ‘Inka button theek karo’! I was so happy that Aamir Khan noticed that!”

Chandan Roy Sanyal signed off by stating, “It’s my desire that I want to work with him (Aamir Khan) in a full-fledged role. He’s one of my favourite actors since Rangeela (1994) apart from Kamal Haasan.”
