Ekta Kapoor explains why she tells stories of women who start with less: “They have to fight for everything. That fight is real”

en Bollywood News Ekta Kapoor explains why she tells stories of women who start with less: “They have to fight for everything. That fight is real”

Ekta Kapoor has reflected on how her storytelling choices have often centred on women navigating everyday struggles rather than extraordinary success stories, saying she has always been drawn to characters shaped by resilience and persistence. Speaking about whether her shows empower women, Kapoor addressed a common perception about emotional television narratives and explained why she believes those portrayals reflect lived realities for many viewers.

Ekta Kapoor explains why she tells stories of women who start with less: “They have to fight for everything. That fight is real”

“People see a woman in a saree crying, so they think it will be a very weak story,” she said in a podcast with Mohsin Khan. “But the women we have shown are dealing with real struggles. They have to listen to taunts from their families every day. They have to fight for their position. That fight is real.”

“Strength is not only about running a big company”

Kapoor said her idea of strength has never been limited to visible success or professional achievement. Instead, she remains interested in stories about women building their lives despite limited opportunities. “Strength doesn't only come when you are running a big company,” she said. “Strength means that life has given you very little. What have you made of it?”

She added that she is especially drawn to characters who begin with disadvantages but continue to move forward. “I am very interested in those stories. Whether it's a girl who has got something less in life. Whether she has a lack of upbringing, money or opportunities. And she has made her life from there.”

“Stories are about women who are still trying”

Kapoor also emphasised that her storytelling choices have often focused on women in transition rather than those already positioned as role models. “A story is not always about women who have achieved,” she said. “It's always about women who are trying to achieve. Women who have made a lot out of nothing that was given to them.”

Her remarks underline a recurring theme across many of her projects, where personal resilience and everyday negotiation with circumstances form the emotional backbone of the narrative rather than conventional ideas of success.
