The launch of 'FICCI-EY Media & Entertainment Report' was held at a five-star hotel in Mumbai and was attended by various reputed personalities of the media and entertainment industry. Blockbuster producer Dinesh Vijan attended an interesting panel discussion called ‘Box Office @ ₹20,000 Crore: Inside the Economics of Theatres in the Streaming Age’ wherein he spoke about the film industry, the current trends and a lot more. At one point, he was asked about why India is an under-screened market and he raised some important points.
Dinesh Vijan said, “If films are not landing, then how can you increase screens? We were not clear about what content to make. Now suddenly, a bunch of films have landed and they have done extremely did well.”
He added, “I'll give you an example of my film, Chhaava (2025). My distributor called me and said, 'There are people putting up white cloths and showing the film! That's piracy. We should stop it'. I asked a simple question, 'Is there a theatre nearby, in the range of 2-3 kms? If there isn't, don't stop them. It's not fair. If there is, please request them to go there and see the film'. I had never made a film of this sort until Stree 2 (2024) and Chhaava that needed penetration. If there were more screens, they would have done x more.”
Dinesh Vijan further revealed that the super-success of multiple films has given the confidence to the ecosystem to attempt to add screens, “Now we are ready to have that conversation. There have been more conversations about it in the last six weeks than there were in the last six years!”
