Sunny Deol’s new innings began in Bollywood with Gadar 2 (2023). It collected Rs. 525.45 crores and was the all-time record grosser of Bollywood for some time. His next film, Jaat (2025), underperformed but showed healthy trending and earned Rs. 89.50 crores. It’s a feat as films of certain actors struggle to even cross the Rs. 50 crore mark at times. And now, Border 2 is also on its way to becoming a blockbuster. Despite such a great track record, it’s shocking to see that, except Lahore 1947, none of his upcoming films are with big banners or big directors. We asked trade experts the reason behind it.
Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “Even in the 80s and 90s, Sunny was a part of several important films. But even he never ran after banners. If your success ratio is very good, that’s all that matters.”
Distributor and exhibitor Raj Bansal answered, “Maybe they felt that Gadar 2 was a fluke. Also, Jaat was expected to do huge business. This could be the reason.”
Trade analyst Atul Mohan stated, “His image and aura are very strong. Not everyone can make a film that can do justice to it.”
Vishek Chauhan, owner of Roopbani Cinema in Purnia, Bihar, minced no words as he thundered, “These big banners of Bollywood don’t know how to make films with Sunny Deol. They had forgotten him for 20 years. Most of them make films for South Mumbai and South Delhi. If I am weak in a subject, how am I supposed to write a thesis on it? For them, Sunny Deol is someone who has come back from a time machine. They can’t design a film that’ll do justice to him. Only the South guys or old filmmakers can do justice. Hopefully, the eyes of the producers will open after Border 2. But where will they get directors? Also, why are we discussing it? Does it matter? As long as the numbers are coming, who cares who he’s making films with?”
He continued, “It’s a good sign that he’s not working with such makers. He should work with those who understand that space, his brand power and his audience.”
