The blockbuster success of Gadar 2 and Border 2 has now enhanced expectations for Sunny Deol’s next – Lahore 1947. Based on the popular play Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya, it marks the return of Sunny with his Ghayal (1990), Damini (1993) and Ghatak (1996) director, Rajkumar Santoshi. It is produced by Aamir Khan, who also features in the film in an extended cameo. The other actors in the film are Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi and Ali Fazal. Trade experts unanimously predicted that it’s a film that can work big time at the box office.
Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi are joining hands after a gap. That would grab a lot of attention and eyeballs. Rajkumar Santoshi had told me long back that this has been one of his favourite subjects and that he has been wanting to make it for a long time. When a person is so keen to make a project like that, it would reflect on the screen. Moreover, with Aamir Khan as the producer and the creative inputs that would have come in with Rajkumar Santoshi would have been fantastic as well.”
Speaking highly of their 100% track record, Taran Adarsh stated, “It has been a hat-trick for them. I hope iss baar bhi woh dono chauka maare!”
Vishek Chauhan, owner of Roopbani Cinema in Purnia, Bihar, exclaimed, “People are looking forward to Lahore 1947 because it’s a collaboration between Rajkumar Santoshi and Sunny Deol. They have never gone wrong. Sunny just had a 45-minute role in Damini (1993) and yet walked away with a National Award. So, there’s no one better than Santoshi to tap into Sunny Deol and give him those dialogues and elevation.”
Trade analyst Atul Mohan said, “Rajkumar Santoshi is one of the best commercial filmmakers of our industry. He must have given careful thought before making it. Also, Aamir Khan would not have backed it if it didn’t have enough meat. Moreover, it’s difficult to convince Sunny Deol as well. Hence, the expectations are immense.”
Distributor and exhibitor Raj Bansal remarked, “It will fetch a huge opening. If it works commercially, then you’ll see Sunny Deol on another level. That’s because it’s not the usual action masala film. Until now, the belief is that Sunny’s films work only if he shouts and gets angry. Lahore 1947 is not in that zone. Hence, its success will give a huge boost to Sunny.”
