DC league of Super-Pets: “I love that their superpowers are earned over time through lessons, takeaways and experience” – says Dwayne Johnson

Dwayne Johnson and director Jared Stern talk about their experience working together on DC League of Super-Pets.

This August, Warner Bros. Pictures is geared up to showcase a whole new facet of the DC universe with their forthcoming animated action extravaganza - DC league of Super-Pets directed by Jared Stern - a veteran writer/consultant on the LEGO movies. With DC League of Super-Pets, Stern makes his animated feature film directorial debut.

Leading the pack and lending his voice to Krypto - The Superdog is none other than Dwayne Johnson himself! Johnson, who also serves as a producer on the film under his Seven Bucks banner. When it comes to turning that kernel of an idea into the high concept feature story, Johnson says, “I give credit to Jared Stern. And I’ve worked with a few writer/directors in my career, but he’s one who truly will leave his ego at the door—he just wants to create and deliver the best product. And I think when you work in animation, you realize that you have multiple opportunities to actually continue to work on the writing and the animation, to always be thinking about upping the game, and I think that puts you in a great mind space. I love the creativity that went into the Super-Pets—what they look like, what their superpowers are. I love that their superpowers are earned over time through lessons, takeaways and experience; they have to learn to embrace their superpowers, too, which I think is a great addition to the story. And I think it’s also a great thread for kids and families around the world to talk about after the movie’s done.”

Delving into his experience working with Johnson, director Stern mentions, “Dwayne is also a producer on the film, so the character of Krypto was already pretty baked ahead of recording the dialogue; but then, when you have such an iconic voice, I think inevitably the actor who is portraying him is going to help shape the character further, and he did; we just started writing more and more towards what would sound great coming out of his mouth and I think it made the character even more specific and it just got better and better once he came in.”

The director confesses that he was, at first, intimidated by the idea of working with the icon. “I’ll be honest, I was very nervous directing Dwayne for the first time, but Dwayne is a really soft-spoken, thoughtful man who made sure that he was just really there to serve the story and the character. So, as nervous as I was when I first met him, he instantly put me at ease.”

Along with Dwayne Johnson, the film also stars the voices of Kevin Hart as Ace, Kate McKinnon, John Krasinski, Vanessa Bayer, Natasha Lyonne, Keanu Reeves among others. The film will be released by Warner Bros. Pictures in cinemas across India on August 5, 2022 in English, Hindi, Tamil & Telugu.
