The Coronavirus-induced pandemic dealt a heavy blow to the entertainment sector all across the world and Bollywood is no exception. However, in 2022, the Hindi film industry started coming back to life and then performed impressively in 2023. Once that happened, the revenue also increased for the different production houses of the industry. However, the jump seen by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions is extraordinary. It has come to light that it saw a four-fold rise in revenue in FY 2022-23 compared to the previous fiscal.

As per an article in The Economic Times, the reputed banner earned Rs. 276 crores in FY 2021-22 and in the next year, its revenue jumped to Rs. 1040 crores. The article further states that this four times jump in revenue was possible thanks to the success of Dharma Productions’ tentpole film, Brahmastra. The superhero sci-fi flick starred Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt along with Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna and Mouni Roy. Superstar Shah Rukh Khan featured in a cameo in this flick, which is also going to get a sequel soon.

Besides Brahmastra, Dharma also released Vicky Kaushal-Kiara Advani-Bhumi Pednekar starrer Govinda Naam Mera, Varun Dhawan-Kiara Advani-Anil Kapoor-Neetu Kapoor starrer JugJugg Jeeyo, Vijay Deverakonda-Ananya Panday starrer Liger and Akshay Kumar-Emraan Hashmi starrer Selfiee in the financial year.

The Economic Times story also stated that in FY 2021-22, Dharma Productions’ net profit decreased by 59% to Rs. 11 crores while its expenses were Rs. 1,028 crores. In the same period, it earned Rs. 19 crores from distribution, Rs. 167 crores from the sale of digital rights, Rs. 34 crores from the sale of satellite rights and Rs. 21 crores from the sale of music rights. In the FY 2022-23, it accumulated Rs. 656 crores from distribution rights, Rs. 140 crores from digital rights, Rs. 83 crores from satellite rights and Rs. 75 crores from music rights.

The article further informed the readers that while Karan Johar owns a 90.7% stake in the company, his mother Hiroo Johar owns 9.24%.

Meanwhile, Dharma Productions is gearing up for many exciting releases in the next financial year like Rajkummar Rao-Janhvi Kapoor starrer Mr And Mrs Mahi, Vicky Kaushal-Triptii Dimri-Ammy Virk starrer Bad Newz, Alia Bhatt-starrer Jigra, Akshay Kumar-Ananya Panday starrer period flick on C Sankaran Nair, Ibrahim Ali Khan's launch vehicle Sarzameen etc.
