Border 2 picked up significantly over the extended four-day weekend and is all set to become a blockbuster. The question that arises is – will it be able to cross the lifetime of Sunny Deol’s earlier blockbuster, Gadar 2. The 2023 flick collected Rs. 525.45 crores in its lifetime. Border 2 has collected Rs. 216.79 crores in 5 days and has shown solid trending, fueling hope that it can be Sunny Deol’s highest grosser.
Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “The box office can spring a lot of surprises. But it’s possible at the rate at which it's going. Even if it doesn’t or falls short by a few crores, it’s a big achievement.”
Vishek Chauhan, owner of Roopbani Cinema in Purnia, Bihar, replied, “I’ll be very disappointed if it doesn’t exceed Rs. 500 crores mark. Time will tell whether it’ll beat Gadar 2 or not. But based on word of mouth, content and almost a clean run, I believe that it’ll cross Rs. 500 crores for sure. Some films are being released, but none of them will give a tough fight to it. What’s also significant is that the family crowd, who hesitated to watch Dhurandhar, have no such qualms for Border 2.”
Atul Mohan explained, “There’s a craze for this film. But I doubt it has created a sensation like Gadar 2. During that time, people had arrived in cinemas on tractors. I don’t think something of that sort has happened with Border 2.”
Taran Adarsh, in agreement, added, “Border (1997) also has a recall value. However, Gadar had elements like the handpump moment, while the characters and dialogue of Tara Singh became iconic.”
Distributor and exhibitor Raj Bansal stated, “I said this before release and I still maintain that I don’t see Border 2 crossing Gadar 2’s collections. It might not be that huge in Week 2 compared to Week 1. This is what happens with most biggies, except Dhurandhar. That film did better in the second week than the first.”
Taran Adarsh signed off by remarking, “The numbers are secondary. What’s important is that after Dhurandhar, one more film has worked. That’s very important for the health and well-being of the industry.”
