As Bhakshak completes two years since its release, Bhumi Pednekar has revisited the film’s impact while expressing concern over how closely its themes continue to mirror reality. The crime thriller, which focused on girl-child abuse, marked a significant moment in the actor’s filmography, not just for its subject matter but also for the conversations it sparked beyond cinema.

Taking to Instagram, Bhumi shared a detailed note reflecting on the film’s journey and why its relevance today leaves her feeling unsettled. “Two years ago, Bhakshak travelled across borders, messages poured in from every corner of the world, not because people just watched it, but because people felt it. I was overwhelmed then. I’m heartbroken today. Because the truth is, this story is still so relevant. Sexual violence on women and children is becoming the basic thread of us,” she wrote.
She further highlighted concerns around child safety in recent times, adding, “The last few weeks have reminded us how unsafe the world can be for children. No child should have to grow up hyper-aware of danger. That burden belongs to us not them. Children deserve freedom. To play. To dress as they choose. To be protected, accepted, and held by society when they have no one. Some films end when the credits roll. Some refuse to let us look away. Bhakshak will always be one of those for me.”

Bhumi also shared a note on her Instagram Stories, later reposted by Bhakshak director and writer Pulkit. In the message, she wrote, “2 years of Bhakshak. This last monologue from Bhakshak still haunts me. It keeps getting relevant with every passing year and that shouldn’t be the case. Jus in the past few weeks we’ve seen multiple cases of young children being sexually assaulted. WE ARE FAILING OUR CHILDREN. We are a broken system that needs to be fixed now. No little child needs to be aware of their body and that it’s in threat at such a young age. Sharam karo thodi. Call out the perpetrators. Voice for them to be punished.”
Responding to Bhumi’s post, Pulkit penned a note thanking the actor for her performance, writing, “Thankyou Bhumi for playing Vaishali the way you did it. You were, are and forever will be one of my favourite actor to collaborate and tell a story. Lots of love!” Bhumi acknowledged the message on her social media stories.
With Bhakshak, Bhumi fronted a film rooted in disturbing realities that continue to make headlines. Over the years, the actor has consistently used her platform to speak about social issues, particularly around women’s and children’s safety. Her recent series Daldal, currently trending globally, continues that trajectory of socially driven storytelling.
