The first-day expectation for the Diwali release Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 before release was Rs. 20-25 crores which rose to Rs. 27 crores a day before release. But it stunned the trade by opening at Rs. 36.60 crores. We asked the trade experts about what went in its favour, especially since it clashed with the gigantic multi-starrer Singham Again.

Trade veteran Taran Adarsh answered, “A lot of factors went in its favour. The horror comedy genre, the entire packaging, solid casting etc. Also, the question of who Manjulika is intrigued viewers. It was a well-packaged entertainer.”

Trade analyst Atul Mohan stressed on the horror comedy quotient, “The genre is working big time right now.”

Girish Johar, producer and film business analyst, exulted, “They got the promotions right and went all out. They also went to the tier 2 regions. The title track helped but not majorly. Singham Again didn’t have the advantage. Here, the music was recognizable. But had there been 1 or 2 good songs, this would have collected Rs. 300 crores despite the clash.”

Film exhibitor and distributor Akshaye Rathi said, “Besides the clash and the clamour around it, what also worked was the entertainment quotient in the film and the franchise value which is much bigger than any elements that are a part of it. This was followed by very good direction, storytelling, entertainment value, acting etc.”

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 starred Kartik Aaryan, Vidya Balan, Madhuri Dixit and Triptii Dimri and was directed by Anees Bazmee. It marked the return of Vidya Balan to the franchise after Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007) and the coming together of Kartik and Anees after Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (2022).

Singham Again, meanwhile, starred Ajay Devgn, Ranveer Singh, Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Tiger Shroff, Arjun Kapoor and Jackie Shroff. It was directed by Rohit Shetty.
